Signs Your Catch Basin Is Clogged (and Needs Cleaning)

Catch basins are your property's first line of defence against flooding and water damage. When they clog, the consequences range from minor inconvenience to major property damage. Knowing the warning signs early can save you thousands in emergency repairs.

What Does a Clogged Catch Basin Look Like?

A functioning catch basin quietly collects surface water and channels it into the storm sewer system. When one clogs, the signs are hard to miss — if you know what to look for.

1. Water Pooling Around the Basin

The most obvious sign is standing water that doesn't drain after rain. If water pools around the grate or in the surrounding area for more than a few hours after a storm, the basin is likely clogged with sediment, leaves, or debris.

2. Foul Odours

Decomposing organic matter trapped in a clogged basin produces a noticeable smell — especially in warm weather. If you detect a sewage-like odour near a catch basin, it's overdue for cleaning.

3. Visible Debris at the Grate

Leaves, trash, gravel, and silt accumulating on top of the grate are a clear indicator that more debris has likely settled inside the basin below. Surface buildup is always a warning of worse conditions underneath.

4. Slow Drainage

If water drains noticeably slower than it used to, the basin or its connecting pipes are partially blocked. This often worsens gradually, so property managers may not notice until a heavy rain reveals the problem.

5. Pavement Damage Near the Basin

Standing water deteriorates asphalt and concrete. If you notice cracking, potholes, or erosion around a catch basin, poor drainage has likely been an issue for some time.

6. Flooding During Moderate Rain

A properly maintained basin handles normal rainfall easily. If moderate rain causes flooding on your property, one or more basins are not functioning at capacity.

What to Do About It

The fix is straightforward: professional vacuum truck cleaning. Our crew pumps out all sediment, debris, and standing water, then flushes the connecting pipes to restore full drainage. Most cleanings take 15-30 minutes per basin.

We recommend bi-annual cleaning — spring and fall — to prevent clogs from developing. Commercial properties with heavy traffic or proximity to trees may benefit from quarterly service.
