How Debris and Oil Build-Up Affects Catch Basin Functionality

Every catch basin on your property is designed to collect surface water and filter out debris before it enters the storm sewer system. Over time, the very materials it's designed to trap — sediment, leaves, gravel, oil, and trash — accumulate and reduce the basin's capacity to function.

How Debris Accumulates

Catch basins work by allowing water to flow through a grate while heavier materials settle to the bottom of the sump. This design is effective, but it means every basin gradually fills up. The rate depends on the environment — properties near trees, construction sites, or high-traffic roads fill faster.

The Oil Problem

Oil and grease from vehicles float on the water surface inside catch basins. Over time, this layer thickens and can solidify, especially in cold weather. Hardened oil deposits restrict water flow and are much harder to remove than loose sediment.

Properties with high vehicle traffic — parking lots, car dealerships, trucking yards, and gas stations — are especially vulnerable to oil buildup.

Consequences of Neglected Basins

  • Flooding: Reduced capacity means the basin can't handle normal rainfall, leading to surface water pooling and property flooding.
  • Infrastructure damage: Standing water erodes asphalt, undermines foundations, and accelerates concrete deterioration.
  • Environmental pollution: Overflowing basins send unfiltered water — carrying oil, chemicals, and debris — directly into local waterways.
  • Pest attraction: Standing water and decomposing organic matter attract mosquitoes, rodents, and other pests.
  • Liability risk: Flooded parking lots and walkways create slip-and-fall hazards that expose property owners to legal liability.

The Solution: Regular Professional Cleaning

Professional vacuum truck cleaning removes all accumulated material — sediment, debris, oil, and sludge — and restores the basin to full capacity. For most properties, bi-annual cleaning prevents problems. High-traffic or high-debris properties should consider quarterly service.
